Shooting at US Capitol confirmed suicide: police

Shooting that prompted the lockdown of the US Capitol was a suicide, police said Saturday.

"Confirmed: self-inflicted gunshot by neutralized subject," Capitol Police spokeswoman Kimberly Schneider said. "Multiple law enforcement/emergency services have responded in support of the incident."

The US Capitol Building has been locked down as a precautionary measure after the shooting.

Schneider said that the lockdown was lifted about 3:50 pm ET (1250 GMT) and pedestrian traffic was allowed, but the west front remained closed till further notice.

The Capitol Police were also investigating a suspicious package on the lower West Terrace of the building, she said.

The US Congress has been on spring break for two weeks and lawmakers are set to return to work on Monday.
